Providing 5G LTE Connectivity to Sydney Ferries

The Challenge
Connectivity in the marine environment can be challenging so when Transdev and Australian Sentinel were awarded project funding by the Australian Government’s 5G Innovation Initiative grant to provide primary vessel connectivity for Public Announcements, Passenger Information Displays and on-board passenger WiFi as well as for CCTV streaming and providing Help Point Data, the choice of antenna solutions would be a critical and an essential part of the deployment.

Two antenna models were used in combination for this solution: The BSM-6-60-5SP (x2 per vessel) and the CM2-24-58-2RPSP
The BSM-6-60-5SP is an ideal solution for use in various environments: for cellular modems/routers and M2M wireless connectivity applications including Marine. The omnidirectional radiation pattern allows easy placement of the antenna in an elevated position without requiring directional alignment. It covers
617-960 / 1427-6000MHz thus all 4G and 5G LTE cellular
frequencies. Additionally it comes with a marine ratchet mount accessory. The weather and corrosion-resistant design makes it suitable for marine and coastal applications.
The CM2-24-58-2RPSP is a compact, robust low-profile minimun visual impact housing containing two antenna elements with effective isolation and low correlation covering 2.4-2.5 / 4.9-6GHz for WiFi 6 connectivity. This antenna additionally is able to work without an additional ground plane and is an ideal ceiling mount solution.

Transdev deliver customer- centric, efficient and innovative transportation, therefore required a 5G solution that reflected this forward thinking transportation experience.

The Solution
Working closely with the mobility router OEM Cradlepoint, our regional distributor Tech Data ANZ and the managed service provider based in Sydney, Australian Sentinel, we were able to bring the full turnkey solution to market.
As a result the end user, Transdev, were impressed with the high bandwidth of the 5G that this solution provided, enabling for reliable streaming CCTV footage in real-time and meeting the specifications set when this contract was awarded. Furthermore the solution was implemented and ready to use within days.
The BSM-6-60-5SP and CM2-24-58-2RPSP antennas supplied by Panorama played an integral part in achieving this high level of performance. Built for the marine environment, the BSM-6-60 is easy to install and covers all 4G/5G LTE bands so a high performance antenna solution ideal for the application. The CM2-24-58-2RPSP offers WiFi 6 capability and a reliable solution used on many mass transit fleets globally.
