Emergency Service Network (ESN)
The new Emergency Services Network (ESN) is set to transform public safety communications. Led by the Home Office, it will replace the current Airwave voice radio service across Great Britain over the next few years. 300,000 frontline users will depend on ESN from the police, fire and rescue, and ambulance services, as well as coast guard, local authorities, and utility services.
The aim is to deliver a modern voice and data service across the country, providing a single reliable and secure platform for mobile communications for all users. ESN is to utilise 4G LTE cellular infrastructure owned and operated by EE, part of the BT Group, which is a significant change to the current Airwave service which is a privately owned 380-430MHz TETRA network.
As a result, it’s expected that there will be a period of migration between these technologies to ensure constant communications for users with Airwave likely to be switched off by 2025. As a result, there will be a period of time over the coming years when increasingly complex antenna systems will be required in vehicle fleets to ensure reliable voice and data connectivity is sustained for the safety and security of personnel during the transition.

Getting Ready for ESN
Panorama’s products have already been extensively proven in providing voice and data communications for public safety in Great Britain. Our GPSK series; GPS/GNSS & UHF TETRA antenna has been a popular product, and widely seen as the ‘de facto’ antenna solution across Airwave user organisations providing an efficient TETRA and high performance GPS/GNSS antenna in a compact single hole mounting.
With the requirement for additional connected devices in vehicles, in 2009 Panorama developed the GPSB “Sharkee®” antenna incorporating GPS/GNSS, Multi-Band 2G/3G/4G LTE Cellular, Dual Band WiFi and an external TETRA whip with rugged single hole mount shark fin housing. ESN operates on EE’s 4G network which uses LTE technology over three frequency bands to provide a mobile broadband bearer for both data and mission critical voice services.
Migrating to 4G LTE
MiMo is a key feature of 4G to provide a high speed broadband. MiMo leverages on multi-path signal propagation to increase the channel capacity. 2×2 MiMo requires the use of two antennas at the client terminal, but with the introduction of LTE Cat 18/20, a 4×4 MiMo antenna system will be required with four antennas. A MiMo system requires the antennas to have a defined level of isolation and a low correlation factor, which Panorama has designed into its’ “all-in-one” solutions, for a simple, effective antenna installation.
The antenna system is a critical part of an ESN vehicle installation. Panorama has a complete range of ESN Ready MiMo multi-function antenna solutions, which are easy to install and provide a pre-defined MiMo performance. In addition, we have a range of single (SiSo) multi-band cellular antennas as a second antenna to provide MiMo function in conjunction with an existing antenna, where required. Panorama continues to develop new products for 4G/LTE & 5G to ensure that we are able to offer high performance, cost effective solutions for public safety use.
